Introduction
The theme of this special issue will be emerging methods and practices of analysis, design and
optimization of smart and connected manufacturing and service systems. The smartness enables AI and
advanced data analytics based intelligent operations and management in production and service, while the
complexity is embedded through inter-connected components and units in the system. The purpose is to
show the state-of-the-art research and applications in the general area of design and optimization in smart
and interconnected production and service, by bringing together researchers and practitioners from both
academia and industry, to address the significant advancement, expose the unsolved challenges, present the
needs for integration with new technologies, and provide visions for future research and development.

 

Due to strong competitions in modern manufacturing and service, smart production and service become
more and more critical, which is the foundation for sustainable success and competitiveness in the
connected world. Substantial efforts have been devoted to research and practice of modelling, analysis,
design, control, and optimization. In recent years, significant advancement in information technology,
particularly AI, machine learning, big data, etc., and the fast-growing economic activities, as well as the
rapidly changing market have generated numerous opportunities for continuous improvement innovations.
At the same time, many new challenges have emerged in order to apply and implement these innovations.
Such opportunities and challenges have substantially expanded the scope of production research. In addition
to manufacturing, the service sectors, such as healthcare, retail, energy, and transportation, are also
experiencing the paradigm changes. The first principle based scientific methodology and rigorous
quantitative approach are needed to analyse, design and optimize system structure and operations in such
systems.


This special issue aims to publish original, significant and visionary papers describing scientific methods
and technologies in analysis, design, and optimization of smart and connected production and service
systems with both solid theoretical development and practical importance. Rigorous quantitative methods
and models supporting real world practice in production and service systems are welcome. Submissions of
scientific results from experts in academia and industry worldwide are strongly encouraged. Topics to be
covered include, but are not limited to, the following:

About Guest Editors


Prof. Jingshan Li received the B.S. degree from Department of Automation, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, the M.S. degree from Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering-systems from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1989, 1992, and 2000, respectively. He was a Staff Research Engineer at the Manufacturing Systems Research Laboratory, General Motors Research and Development Center, Warren, MI from 2000 to 2006, and was with Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Center for Manufacturing, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY from 2006 to 2010. He is now a Professor in Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Associate Director of Wisconsin Institute of Healthcare Systems Engineering, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. His primary research interests are in modeling, analysis and control of manufacturing and healthcare systems. He is an IEEE Fellow and IISE Fellow, and received the 2010 NSF Career Award, 2009 IIE Transactions Best Application Paper Award, 2005 IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering Best Paper Award, 2006 IEEE Early Industry/ Government Career Award in Robotics and Automation, and multiple awards in international conferences. He has been a Senior Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, Department/Area Editor of IISE Transactions and Flexible Service and Manufacturing Journal, and Associate Editor of International Journal of Production Research and
International Journal of Automation Technology, and was a Senior Editor of IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters.


Professor Chao-Bo Yan received the B.S. degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China, in 2004, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Control Theory and Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2007 and 2012, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor with the School of Automation Science and Engineering, Faculty of Electronic and Information Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China. He was a Visiting Scholar with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA, from 2009 to 2010 and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow from 2012 to 2014. His research interests include modeling, analysis, and optimization of production systems, and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) theory and its applications to manufacturing, logistics, and inventory systems. Dr. Yan is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, and an Editor on the Conference Editorial Board (CEB) of the IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering.

Professor Hyun-Jung Kim received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), in 2009, 2011, and 2013, respectively. She was a researcher in Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research, University of California, Berkeley from 2013 to 2014, and was an Assistant Professor in Department of Systems Management Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University, from 2015 to 2019. She is now an Assistant Professor in Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, KAIST. Her primary research interests are in modelling, scheduling, and control of manufacturing systems. She has been an Associate Editor of IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering and a Program Committee Member, MASM: Semiconductor  Manufacturing, Winter Simulation Conference. She has also been an Associate Editor of Journal of the Korean Institute of
Industrial Engineers.


Professor Xiaolei Xie received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing, China, in 2008, the M.S.E. degree in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA, in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI, USA, in 2014. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Industrial Engineering, Tsinghua University. His research interests are in stochastic modelling, optimization, and advanced data analytics in healthcare systems. He has been an Associate Editor of Flexible Services and Manufacturing Journal, IEEE Robotics and Automation Letter, IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering and IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering. He was a guest editor of IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering.


Professor Hyo-Kyung Lee received the B.S. degree in Information and Industrial Engineering from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, in 2012, the M.S. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, in 2013, and the Ph.D. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, in 2019. She is currently an Assistant Professor in Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Pittsburgh. Her research investigates healthcare analytics, data-driven decision support, and operational planning and management.
She has been an Associate editor of IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering.
